This is a permanent method of contraception that is carried out by cutting, sealing or blocking the vas deferens (tube that carries sperm from the testicles to the penis). It is one of the most reliable methods available (with a 99.5% effectiveness) and it won't affect your sex drive.

This procedure is suitable for people who have a penis who are sure they never want children or do not want more children. This is an important decision so it’s important to consider other options available beforehand.
What are the advantages?
- After the sterilisation has worked you don’t have to use contraception ever again.
- The operation takes about 10 – 15 minutes and may be done in a clinic.
What are the disadvantages?
- It can’t be easily reversed and it takes between 1 to 3 months for it to be effective.
- It doesn’t protect you from Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) therefore the use of condoms alongside is recommended.
Is it reversible?
The vasectomy is meant to be a permanent procedure. There are reversal operations but they are not always successful. Success will depend upon how and when you were sterilised. Reversal is rarely available on the NHS and can be difficult and expensive to obtain privately.
